When my parents were going through their divorce, I was experiencing my own lonely descent into low self-esteem and depression. I was hurting; consequently. I lashed out at the person who was closest to me, my mother. I couldn't empathize with her pain, and I didn't think she cared about mine. Once I was saved, Jesus showed me how to honor my parents even though He was their Savior. He followed their commandments and was accountable to them. Jesus didn't say to honor your parents unless they hurt you, He simply said to honor them.****Understanding that honoring my parents is meaningful to Jesus helped me to be more respectful toward my mother, even when we disagreed. Today, we enjoy a close relationship. I honor her for all the sacrifices she made and continues to make for me.**As He was agonizingly stretched out on the cross at the crucifixion, Jesus made sure His mother, Mary, would be cared for. Jesus told John and His mother, "Dear woman, here is your son." And he said to his disciple, "Here is your mother" (John 19: 26-27, NLT). John took her to his home. Even in His most distressing time, Jesus honored His mother.
