Welcome to THE SUNDAY MASS. Since 1970 the Passionist Community of the Province of St. Paul of the Cross has offered a televised Sunday Mass in the metropolitan New York City area and across the United States. While our audience is largely Roman Catholic, we receive frequent letters from our Protestant brethren, and even from the Jewish community. Our mission statement is brief and to the point:

To share with all people, especially the aging and infirm,
God's greatest gift - the Eucharist.

By taping the Masses at St. Frances of Rome Church in the Bronx, NY, we provide a prayerful environment that allows our viewers to experience a sense of local church and community celebration. Priests and Bishops from the neighboring dioceses look forward to sharing their insights with a nationwide audience. Congregations and choirs, young and not so young, volunteer their time and talent to bring inspiration and comfort to our television viewers and radio audience.

The Passion of Jesus is the greatest love story of all time. We Christians believe that to celebrate the Lord's Supper is a sacred event that connects us to the eternal sacrifice of Jesus on the Cross. When people cannot attend Eucharist in church any longer, television and radio provide a vital alternative for spiritual nourishment. Letters testify to the way God touches people when they attend to His word with humility and faith. It is our privilege to present THE SUNDAY MASS to a large cross section of people, from believers to seekers, for the loving hand of God rests upon us all.

The Passionists and our associates in ministry give thanks to all those who foster THE SUNDAY MASS, unite with us in prayer, and support us by their contributions. May God bless you with peace and consolation on the journey of life.

In the Compassion of Jesus,

For I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord
Jesus, on the night he was handed over, took break, and, after he had
given thanks, broke it and said, "This is my body that is for you. Do this in
remembrance of me." In the same way also the cup, after supper, saying,
"This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink
it, in remembrance of me." For as often as you eat this bread and drink the
cup you proclaim the death of the Lord until he comes. 1 Cor. 11: 23-26

One of the most popular of twentieth-century hymns, "The Old Rugged Cross" was written by Rev. George Bennard in 1913, who also composed the tune. He wrote it after a "trying experience" had caused him to reflect seriously about the significance of the Cross. This beautiful hymn brings home the truth of the Cross to us: of God's love in the midst of pain; of His victory in the midst of defeat; of the cost of our forgiveness; and of the assurance of our salvation.
